Kassel has one of the richest traditions of theatre amongst the cities in Germany.
As early as 1603 to 1605, Landgrave Maurice built the Ottoneum as the first permanent theatre building in Germany. From 1765 to 1769, a new opera house came into being in Königsstrasse. Today's State Theatre in Kassel is a theatre for the three genres of operas/operettas, plays and ballets.
